Diffusion and Osmosis Hypothesis
If Diffusion and osmosis is real then when we put the egg in the hypertonic solution it should shrink or in the hypotonic solution it should grow because molecules will pass through the cell membrane of the eggs, it will increase or decrease from the concentration in the water.
Materials
4 eggs
corn syrup
table salt
water
vinegar
Procedure
Place eggs in vinegar for three days.
Have three containers. The first one had corn syrup in it, the second one had plain water in it and the last had water with salt in it.
We weigh each egg before we put the eggs in the solutions.
We placed the eggs in the solutions. (Figure Two)
We left the eggs in the solution over night.
We took the eggs out and weighed them.
We put each egg in a different solution.
We left the eggs in the solution for about three hours.
After we weighed them.
We then observed how they changed and why.
Observations
The eggs removed from the vinegar have no shell (Figure one). They have a mass of 89g, 96g and 90g. They appear larger than regular eggs witch have a mass of about 65g. Egg one started with a mass of 89g, then we put the egg in corn syrup and it dropped to a mass of 39g (Figure three). Then we put egg one into plain water and it went up to the mass of 86g. Egg two started with a mass of 90g, we put it in plain water and it went up to the mass of 94g. After we put egg two in the salt water and it stayed at the mass of 94g. Egg three started at the mass of 97g, then we put it in salt water and it went up to the mass of 98g. Egg three then got put in corn syrup and went down to the mass of 74g.
Mass one
Mass Two
Mass three
Egg One
89g
39g (corn syrup)
86g (plain water)
Egg Two
90g
94g (plain water)
94g (salt water)
Egg three
97g
98g (salt water)
74g (corn syrup)
Conclusion I conclude that diffusion and osmosis is real. I know its real because when we put it in the hypertonic solution (Corn syrup) the egg had a higher concentration than the corn syrup, diffusion took some of the water from the egg and put it in the corn syrup to even out the amount of concentration. When we put the egg into the plain water and it increased in size, that was because the cell membrane let the h2o into the egg, that is also known as osmosis.
Relevance Osmosis keeps us alive. Osmosis keeps us alive because if you couldn't get water and nutrients into the cell your it wouldn't work.
